Driving South
Okay, so what’s the big deal about driving on the left? It’s exciting, in an “I’m getting away with something” kind of way! You’d be thrown in jail back home if you survived…… I highly recommend trying it. I will admit it is a bit odd to have someone coming at you on the right side but you get used to it pretty fast!
Remember how I said to be thankful for street signs? You can add road shoulders to that list too! No need for extra road, it’s costly so you just get what you need, say 8-11 feet for both lanes! The Irish are nice drivers too, they don’t get pissy and tailgate you, they give you the space!
The countryside is lush and green. Parts of it reminded us of a few counties in our neck of the woods like Napa for instance. The major roadways are nice, well signed and include names in both Gaelic and English. Roundabouts come up out of nowhere and I have concluded that they must be cheaper to build than bridges. They work out well.
Sunday we traveled from the Southeast coast seaside town of Bray, which was beautiful, to Wexford, then down through Waterford up north to Killkenny. Killkenny is home to the Killkenny Castle that dates back 800 years. The city is celebrating its 400-year birthday and predates the Smithwick’s Brewery by 100 years. Poor townsfolk, no Ale for 100 years! We walked around the 8 square block site and it was amazing. We tried to get a guard to give us a tour but he said they wouldn’t be doing that until June. Oh well we had a Smithwick’s and fish and chips in an old pub instead!
Today, Monday, we plan to tour the Killkenny church and then head off to Cork!
